PPES News: PPES Rated in the Top Ten

Dear Parents,

As you know, the state is replacing its current labeling system for schools with a letter grade that ranges from A-F. The biggest difference in this new formula is that a high degree of value is placed on how much growth students demonstrate from year to year on the AIMS tests. You can read much more about how the grades are determined on the state's website by clicking here.

I announced that we received an "A," last week. However, we have now found out the scores of everyone else in the state. You can download the spreadsheet by clicking here. I recommend downloading and opening in Excel because it becomes easier to sort in different ways.

The big news is that PPES received 165 points and came in tied for 8th for the entire state. According to my preliminary look at the data, this point total means we performed:
  • as the #2 public elementary school in Arizona
  • as the #1 public K-6 elementary school in the greater Phoenix area
  • as #2 overall elementary school in the greater Phoenix area
  • with the highest growth (70) and total score (165) in the district
Note: The total was achieved by adding growth (70) to the overall passing rate (95)

There is a lot to digest here, and those of you who are familiar with my message regarding data, rankings, assessments, etc., know that there is much more to the story of what makes a great school. These rankings are not everything; they are simply one measure. However, I want to enthusiastically congratulate the staff, students, and families for the collaborative effort that led to our overall score. On this particular measure, and with your ongoing support, PPES delivered in a big way.

There is still a great deal of work to do, improvement to make, and a continuous move forward in these very fluid times. However, this affirmation from the state is a welcome statement about the students' academic performance at PPES.

Tomorrow, I will share a word about grades, as we near "report cards" and conference time! Have a great night!
