PPES News: Preventing and Understanding Girl Drama

Dear Parents,

As we begin this extremely short week, I want to remind you of how thankful I am to be a part of this community. I've been to many schools and have worked with many parent groups. However, this is easily the most enthusiastic and supportive network I've ever seen. You and your children, coupled with a wonderful staff, make PPES the best place for to be a principal. Thank you for all of your tireless support.

I have two items for you this morning:

  1. "Girl Drama," as we like to call it, is something that everyone who works with children will have to deal with at some point. This social theater is entirely normal and represents an interesting stage in child development. However, there are things that you can do to prevent or at least minimize the difficulties that it brings. Christina Brunsman, as well as a group of PPES teachers, will be hosting a book study talk on December 8th, at 6:30 to discuss what we know about the phenomenon and how to help children and adults navigate these situations. Based on the book, "Queen Bees and Wannabes," the talk is sure to be informative and lively. There's still time to pick up the book and complete it before that evening, and I hope you can participate.
  2. We may be making a minor "tweak" to our drop off spots, whereas we continue to deal with an issue that has plagued the school since it opened nearly ten years ago. When cars stop in front of the kindergarten playground in the morning to drop off children it backs up traffic and often puts the child at risk as he or she has to walk past cars that may be backing out of those parking spaces. As I mentioned last week, safety in the parking lot is a significant and important element of our school day, and an injury to a child would be absolutely devastating. I will keep you posted on any changes.
Have a wonderful short week and a fantastic Thanksgiving!

Mike
